https://github.com/geekan/MetaGPT

# The 5 core principles of life | Nobel Prize-winner Paul Nurse
In this video, Nobel Prize-winner Paul Nurse explores the question of what defines life and discusses five key principles of biology.
- Defining life: Nurse explains that there isn't a clear definition of life and what distinguishes living organisms from non-living things. This question has been considered by many, and existing definitions can be complex.
- The cell: Nurse highlights the importance of the cell, the simplest entity that exhibits characteristics of life. It can grow, divide, and reproduce. All living beings, whether single-celled or multicellular, are composed of cells.
- Yeast as a model: Nurse emphasizes the value of yeast as a model organism for understanding more complex living things. His research demonstrates that a human gene can control the reproduction of a yeast cell, indicating a shared mechanism between humans and yeast.
- Gregor Mendel and inheritance: Nurse discusses Gregor Mendel's experiments with peas that led to the discovery of gene inheritance. Mendel observed clear patterns in the offspring of crossbred plants, providing evidence for the existence of genes.
- Evolution by natural selection: Nurse praises Charles Darwin's concept of evolution by natural selection as the most beautiful idea in biology. It suggests that living things have hereditary material, and advantageous differences in this material can drive species to eventually dominate populations, resulting in better-designed organisms without a designer.
- Life as chemistry and information: Nurse explains how life is built upon chemical reactions and the coordination of different compartments within cells. He emphasizes the importance of information management in the functioning of cells, including gene regulation and the role DNA plays as an information storage device.
From these ideas, Nurse identifies five core principles underlying life:
1. Living things are bounded physical entities.
2. The bounded entity is a chemical and informational machine.
3. The machine has a hereditary system that determines its functioning and exhibits variability.
4. The system allows for evolution through natural selection.
5. Living things acquire purpose by evolving and adapting to their environment.
To further delve into knowledge from leading thinkers, Nurse suggests accessing Big Think+ for businesses, offering videos to learn from the world's greatest minds.
